Calibrate your monitor!
To optimize the BRIGHTNESS and CONTRAST settings of your monitor for viewing photography:
- Turn your BRIGHTNESS control all the way up, then gradually turn it back down until the black at the far left begins to look solid (no visible gradation).
- Turn your CONTRAST control up slowly until the white at the far right has just a hint of gradation.
- Fine tune the adjustments so that, ideally, you have a smooth pattern from black through to white, with the gradation at the extreme ends just barely discernible.
